Having a baby is an entirely different scenario second time round. Not only will you have to contend with your emotions, scans, check ups and general feelings of exhaustion, you will also have another child to look after.

And while you will be prepared for the aches and pains that come with being pregnant, you will find that a number of things will vary from how they were on your first baby.

You’ll get bigger quicker

While you may have been able to hide your first pregnancy until you were five or even six months gone, you will find that on your second one you’ll start to show a little quicker and get a bigger bump. Nothing to do with your baby being bigger but rather that your body's muscles aren't as tight or toned.

You will experience worse varicose veins

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can appear lumpy and blue under skin. They usually develop when extra pressure is put on your veins and the valves, which prevent blood flowing backwards, become damaged causing a build up of blood in a particular area. They are usually harmless and if you suffered from them during your first pregnancy, generally, you will suffer from them again, so make sure you exercise and keep your feet elevated.

Your afterbirth contractions will be more painful

After your second delivery you are likely to feel more painful afterbirth contractions. Caused by your uterus cramping as it tries to get back to it's normal size it will feel a lot worse because your muscles are a lot looser.

You will feel third trimester symptoms sooner

Your body has already been made weaker from your first pregnancy, so things like haemorrhoids and back pain, usually associated with your third trimester, will be felt a lot sooner - sometimes even after month four or five.

You are likely to feel more fatigued

You are also likely to feel more tired and while it can be frustrating it is never usually one for concern. It is most likely due to the fact that now you have another child to run after and can’t enjoy as much ‘me-time’ as you had on your first.
