Are itchy, blurry eyes a symptom of pregnancy?

If you’ve noticed that your eyes are itchy, red or more sensitive to light since you found out you were pregnant, you may be wondering whether it’s normal. The good news is that it is.

All those extra hormones rushing around your body, preparing it for the arrival of your baby, are probably what are causing your vision to give you trouble. In fact, thanks to those hormones, that cause your feet and your breasts to swell, your eyes can swell too! Chances are you’ll only realise the problem if you wear contacts, but it can affect your vision for a while.

If your vision trouble goes beyond an irritant, and you find that you are having distorted or blurred vision, speak to your doctor as soon as possible.

Those kinds of dramatic changes can be a sign of high blood pressure or diabetes, and you will want to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

Most importantly, don’t try to use any over the counter eye drops or medications, unless you’ve cleared it with your doctor. Even eye drops can be dangerous for your baby!
