The importance of one-on-one time

For me, spring is one of my favourite seasons because it brings new growth and new beginnings. This year though, I’m finding autumn is bringing me a new lease of life. Last week, our four-year-old son began preschool bringing much change to our home. For the last four years, I have been his primary carer and now for three hours a day, I will be sharing him with a local preschool.
While I was worried about how he might settle in, I’m delighted to see him go in with a smile each day and leaves just as happy. I too have a smile on my face but for different reasons.
Recently I’d written a post called “It’s lonely being a stay-at-home mum” and I’d mentioned when our son started school that I was looking forward to walks with our daughter and meeting the different parents as we drop off and collect our children. Little did I know how much joy this new routine would give me, I feel I’ve entered into a new world and I really like it!
Each day after I drop our son to school, I’ve gone for a walk with our daughter. We’ve chatted and explored as we stroll along. As we pop around the shops, picking up what I need for the day, I’m meeting more people that I haven’t seen in quite some time. It’s like I’m finally now in the same time zone as other parents.
Each day I feel myself grinning for no apparent reason. I feel much more relaxed in myself and feel I can actually give more to both our children. With my daughter, I am now able to get one-on-one time, which has been difficult in the past. My little boy also gets time with me after school while his sister has her nap.
It really is wonderful how well our new routine has settled so quickly. Not only are we all getting one-on-one time, dinner is prepared by lunchtime most days, giving the three of us the afternoon to play together!
Thinking back, I feel silly now for being so worried about how he would settle in. Our son’s new start at preschool has given our home a new beginning and we are all the better for it! Now it’s time for me to dream what it will be like when his little sister starts – I won’t know myself!
Only two more years to go…
