If there is one thing mums love it’s meeting other mums for a coffee and a chat – that chat is about reassurance, doing a brain dump and/or searching for advice. I spent most of my maternity leave for my two kids in Starbucks and established my long lasting relationship with grande skinny lattes. A break out of the house, that doesn’t break the bank, is always welcome for a sleep deprived, frazzled mum and I was definitely one of those. I soon figured out that where I had a coffee was chosen by where kids, well babies, were welcome and where I could change a nappy.  Starbucks I discovered fitted the bill.

I was always scared of deviating from my ‘grande extra hot skinny latte’.  It’s stupid I know but I didn’t have a clue what the bottled syrups were for and somehow was too scared to ask.  I certainly had never, ever deviated, off the hot coffee menu to indulge in a Frappuccino.  Lord above – where would a girl start?

So it was with much anxiety and fear, that we crossed the threshold of Starbucks in Grafton Street, Dublin for the launch of the new ‘However-You-Want-it’ Frappuccino.

You can now choose any combination of milk, coffee, syrup and topping to ensure you get the exact drink you want. So if you are watching your weight you can opt for a low-calorie Frappuccino made with skimmed milk or even with soy milk if you prefer. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you can have a shot of decaf coffee or if you’re a tired mum looking for a pick-me-up you can have your Frappuccino with regular coffee. There is even a Frappuccino for those who don’t like coffee – the ‘crème’ option, which includes delicious strawberries and cream Frappuccino, or a chocolate cream Frappuccino for chocoholics. Basically, customers get the chance to create their own customised drink, with over 35,000 combinations available.

With all that choice you may not know where to start so just ask your barista and they will help you find your favourite. Here are a few examples of the type of Frappuccino that we tasted:

Extra Coffee Caramel Frappuccino
Caramel syrup combined with Starbucks coffee and whole milk, blended with ice and finished off with whipped cream and a ribbon of buttery caramel sauce. Big thumbs up!

Dairy-free Strawberries and Cream Frappuccino
Made with Starbucks strawberry sauce, soya milk, blended with ice and topped with whipped cream (or to keep it entirely dairy-free, order without whipped cream).

Mocha Light Frappuccino Blended Coffee
With approximately 100 calories in a tall size, this sweet and light Frappuccino is a combination of mocha sauce, coffee and skimmed milk blended with ice.

For mums who are on the go Starbucks also have bottled Frappuccinos which are available in two low fat flavours; mocha and strawberry.

Starbucks Frappuccino is priced from €3.65 (Tall), €3.95 (Grande), €4.25 (Venti) and for more information visit www.starbucks.ie
