Road trips are a great, budget-friendly way to travel with kids and young babies. Whether you are heading off on a weekend holiday or driving to the in-laws down the country, it is important you pack correctly so that you don’t forget an important essential.

If you are heading off on one this summer, make sure you tick off everything on this list before leaving the house.

1. Wipes

An absolute essential when going anywhere with kids, no matter how young or old they are! They are perfect for wiping sticky hands, spills and chocolate faces before you arrive at your destination.

2. Plenty of water

Keep everyone hydrated by ensuring there is adequate water for all passengers. At least two bottles each and a spare one should be enough – you can always stop off if you need more.

3. Change of clothes

While you are sure to have a suitcase full of outfits, do pack a small case with a change of clothes that fits in the back seat as the kids are sure to spill something sticky on themselves.

4. Blankets

Blankets for when the kids nod off and want to get comfy.

5. Travel pillows

These always come in handy when your little one is trying to get some shut eye.

6. First aid kit

Don’t drive off without ensuring you have a first aid kit in the back of the car. Fill it with plasters, antiseptic cream, cotton pads and bandages.

7. Toys

Make sure you have plenty of toys in the car to keep the kids happy for long periods of time. Colouring books, stories, soft toys, travel board games and iPads/DVDs are perfect for keeping everyone happy.

8. Rubbish bag

Don’t forget to bring a bag for rubbish along. This will save you crawling around at the end of the journey picking papers and sweet wrappers off the floor.

9. Packed lunch

A packed lunch is an essential when travelling with kids. Avoid anything that will melt like chocolate and try to keep it as healthy as possible, although a few treats will go down well when boredom kicks in.

10. Hand sanitiser

Don’t forget to bring a hand sanitiser with you as the kids are sure to end up needing the bathroom along the side of the road!
