Flying when pregnant is generally safe, albeit a little uncomfortable, but there is a huge difference between travelling for three hours and travelling for more than ten. It can be extremely tiresome and you will have to be mindful of getting up and moving around more than normal.

If you are planning on heading to some far flung destination on a babymoon or you are visiting family on the other side of the world, make sure you keep these handy tips and advice in mind before you leave.

1. Wear comfortable clothes

Leggings, jumpers, tracksuit bottoms or long dresses are a lot more comfortable for flying in when pregnant.

2. Look for empty rows

As soon as you board the plane keep an eye out for any empty rows. If these rows aren’t filled after you have taken off, ask the air hostess if you can move there. You will be guaranteed a much more comfortable journey and the extra room will help you sleep better.

3. Ask someone to lift your bag

Ask for assistance when lifting your bag into the overhead locker, and if there is no one around pop it under the seat in front of you if it fits.

4. Avoid dehydration

Make sure you avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids throughout your trip. Avoid caffeinated drinks and eat plenty of fruit if you can’t stomach too much water.

5. Keep your belt on at all times

Being pregnant is not an excuse to not wear your seat belt. If you are struggling to close it or if it feels too tight across your stomach, ask cabin crew for an extendable strap.

6. How to prevent DVT

Everyone is at risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) when sitting for long periods, but pregnant women are particularly vulnerable. In order to protect yourself from it, make sure you do the following:

  • Wear compression stockings
  • Get up out of your seat regularly
  • Do plenty of foot and leg stretches

7. Make sure you eat

It is important you eat enough food to stave off hunger but not too much that you feel uncomfortable and bloated. Bring plenty of snacks on board that you can nibble on throughout the flight and try to eat the two meals they provide you with.

8. Items to bring with you for a more comfortable trip

  • Headphones
  • Travel pillow
  • Book
  • Eye mask
  • Blanket
