Hearts around the world broke yesterday, when it emerged that a baby in Australia had died after being mistakenly given nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas) instead of oxygen. Now, the child’s grief-stricken mother has broken her silence over the shocking incident.

In an interview with Channel Nine, Sonya Ghanem recalled how she went under general anaesthetic for a C-section – only to be awoken to the news that her baby had passed away.

She said: “I held my baby; they brought him to me at the hospital. I said, ‘I want to see him’. Just looking at him, shaking. ‘My son, wake up,’ I would tell him. ‘Wake up, wake up. What did they do to you?’”

The devastating incident occurred on July 13, at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital, in Sydney. The baby boy, who has been named John, was being treated in the neonatal resuscitation unit at the time.

This is the second such case to arise in recent times, with a baby girl born in June reportedly fighting for her life on account of a similar mix-up.

The tragic case has been passed on to the coroner.
