Is it normal that my child doesn't want to spend her birthday money?

At this age, preschoolers don’t quite have a grasp of what money is, or what it’s for. So, while it may bother you that your child has money she’s not spending, she’s probably more interested in ‘collecting’ the notes and coins. Chances are, your child likes the feel of money, and would rather keep it to play with it, than spend it on something.

Some children do already understand that money is important, but not quite for what. So your child may simply be hanging on to it until she does figure it out.

Use this as an opportunity to show your child how people use money. Take her to the supermarket, for instance, and show her how purchasing works. Show her how you select products, and how you pay for them at the till.

Now let your child point out something that she likes. Then show her how she can use her money to pay for it.

If your child does not want to spend her money, don’t force her. Rather buy her a piggy bank, and show her how to keep her money in it. Tell your child that at some point in the future (a special day like a holiday or birthday that she will remember) she can use some of the money that she’s saved to buy something special.

Another good idea is to introduce your child to the idea of charity. Show her the boxes or tins at the supermarket checkout, and tell her that by giving a few of her coins, she can help people (or animals) that are less fortunate than herself.
