Mount Carmel Private Hospital

Mount Carmel Private Hospital
Mount Carmel Private Hospital in Dublin has always been synonymous with excellent if expensive maternity care. It’s still a perception about the hospital that having a baby there, costs the earth but when MummyPages reviewed their care packages we were presently surprised with what is on offer particularly under the shared care option.

The hospital aims to ensure that mums-to-be and their babies have a safe, comfortable and relaxing journey right through their pregnancy, labour and birth. They offer expert, individual, affordable maternity care and consultant obstetricians work closely with an experienced midwifery team so that all mums and babies get the best care available.

The hospital can provide mums to be with both ‘shared care’ and ‘consultant-led’ maternity care. It is the first option that delivers mums to be an affordable option but with all of the Mount Carmel Private Hospital trimmings.

Shared Care Package
Shared care is where your care is shared between your consultant obstetrician and your GP. When you choose the shared care package you will have a visit with the midwife co-ordinator. She will take your full medical history and advise you on your schedule of care. She will also give you your hospital chart which you must take with you to all your appointments. This package includes semi-private accommodation. It is important to note that if you have had a previous complicated pregnancy, have conceived by IVF, have certain medical conditions or if you are carrying twins you may not be eligible for a shared care package.

If you opt for a shared care package you will have five visits with your obstetrician. Payments of €500 are paid at each your three scan visits. Other fees such as the obstetrician delivery fees are settled by your insurer and most of the hospital costs are covered also.  Some of your GP visits are covered under the ‘Maternity and Infant Care Scheme’. Five of the visits for non-first time mums are covered and six for first time mums are covered. You are recommended to have seven visits so patients will normally pay for one or two visits.  It is recommended that a patient has five visits with their obstetrician. If you require any more visits it is at your own expense.

Example Pricing:
Hospital fees €5,024
Consultant fees €1,500
Total fees €6,524
Less VHI benefit €4,000
Balance €2,524
Less €400 consultant grant €2,124
Less 20% tax (MED1) €1,699

Consultant-led Package
Consultant-led care is where you have all your ante-natal care with a consultant obstetrician of your choice. The number of visits you have with your obstetrician are unlimited and also include your six week post-natal consultation. At week 10 of your pregnancy you will have your first appointment with your consultant. As part of the Consultant-led package you have the choice of private or semi-private accommodation for your hospital stay.

Consultant fees are €2,900 and hospital expenses are additional to this charge.  However, if you have health insurance a substantial amount is paid directly to the hospital.  There will be a balance outstanding depending on the number of nights that you stay and the room type you opt for (private or semi private).

Caesarean Sections (C-section)
For patients who have health insurance, a C-section may be fully covered for five night’s semi-private accommodation. However, you should check with your insurance provider as to what maternity benefits you are entitled to. There are additional charges when having a C-section. If you have pre-paid for a normal delivery package and have a C-section, you will be billed the balance post delivery.

Paediatric Care
The hospital also has an experienced team of consultant pediatricians and nurses providing neo-natal and post-natal care for your baby. The Special Care Baby Unit is fully equipped with incubators, monitors and ventilators. For the post-natal care the consultant paediatrician provides a six week development check for your baby.  If you have any concerns during the six weeks, there are daily clinics available. There are also paediatric consultations available after the six week check for any medical conditions which may arise for your baby. These consultations are on offer with or without a GP referral.
