If you worry about all the nasties that can be found in your families favourite sweets and chocolates, then you will be delighted to hear that Nestlé Confectionery, manufacturer of Kit Kat, Rowntree’s and Aero, are the first major confectioner to remove artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from its confectionary range.

Nestlé Crunch was the very last of the 79 products to be confirmed to have no artificial ingredients. Extensive research and product development began in 2005 which has seen more than 80 ingredients being replaced with alternatives.

Concentrates of fruit, vegetables and edible plants such as carrots and lemon are a few examples of ingredients that are now used to impart their characteristic colours and have been used in some of Ireland’s favourite goodies such as Smarties.

These changes were made in response to the demand by consumers to have fewer artificial ingredients in their foods. Research shows that three quarters of consumers now look for products free of artificial additives when buying their treats
