Pregnancy skin condition: Melasma

Melasma is a dark skin discolouration that can occur during pregnancy and is also known as ‘pregnancy mask’. It appears after the skin has been exposed to the sun. It is associated with the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which is why it is common in pregnant women.

A brown colour is usually seen on the cheeks, nose, upper lip and forehead. There are no side effects associated with Melasma and it is not dangerous but it can make many women self conscious.

The condition can be prevented by wearing sunscreen and should fade after the birth of your child. If you are concerned about his condition you should visit your doctor.

If you suffer from Melasma and don’t want to wait until after your pregnancy for it to disappear, then you can cover it up using make up. We recommend using the new Vichy Dermablend Corrective Foundation. This foundation is a camouflage make-up that provides expert coverage. It holds for up to 16 hours and has SPF 35.

This foundation is so effective in covering skin imperfections that it is recommended and used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Not only does it offer exceptional coverage but it also gives a natural and even finish.

Vichy Dermablend has an RRP of €21 and is available in pharmacies nationwide from February 2012.
