We tend to take it for granted, but Ireland really does have a lot to offer when it comes to weekend breaks and family holidays.
Remember, people flock from all over the world to visit our tiny island, so shouldn’t we spend a little more time exploring what it has to offer?
One of the benefits of living in Ireland is that every location is just hours away.
So, here are just some great parts of the Emerald Isle that you and your family should explore.
1. Killarney, Co. Kerry
Killarney is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations and with good reason.
Surrounded by a stunning landscape, there are lots of outdoor activities suitable for children young and old.
Muckross House, Gardens and Farm is the perfect place to visit on a sunny afternoon.
Other popular destinations include the Gap of Dunloe, Ross Castle, and Carrauntoohil and Killarney Summer Fest is also a huge attraction with street entertainers, concerts and family activities.
2. Lahinch, Co. Clare.
Lahinch is a lovely town on the west coast of the country.
A beautiful beach sweeps past the town and is a great spot for water activities.
It also creates a wonderful backdrop for one of Europe’s top golf courses in case mum or dad want a relaxing afternoon break.
When staying in Lahinch, you can also take day trips to other attractions in Clare, including the Burren, Ailwee Caves and the Cliffs of Moher.
3. Rosslare, Co. Wexford
Dublin to Rosslare is probably one of the most beautifully scenic train journeys you can take in Ireland.
Once you reach your destination, you can visit the Heritage Park, Dunbrody Famine ship, Hook Lighthouse and even visit Wexford Town, which is one of the original Viking settlements.
The view of Wexford harbour and the wildfowl reserve are also fun attractions.
4. Dingle, Co. Kerry
This fishing town has so much for the family to do and is a beautiful part of the country to visit.
One activity that you absolutely must do is jump on a tour boat and visit Fungie.
As well as Oceanworld, there are also lots of great beaches in the area too, including the beautiful Inch beach with its gorgeous sand dunes.
5. Westport, Co. Mayo
One of Mayo’s most family-friendly towns, Westport is packed full of activities that will keep the kids smiling well into the week.
At the Pirate Adventure Park at Westport House, enjoy pedal boating, a pirates' swinging ship, plunge log flume rides, bouncy castles and pedal boats on the lake.
Westport is also the kick-off point for the Great Western Greenway, which offers stunning views all along the route to Achill.
6. Belfast, Co. Antrim
Belfast is the perfect city to explore on foot, which means it’s the perfect chance to leave the car at home.
Being the birthplace of the Titanic, you know there are plenty of cultural opportunities to enjoy in this city, from the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum to many parks, gardens and galleries – and don’t forget to visit Giant’s Causeway.
You may even spot a few Game of Thrones cast members.
7. Waterford City, Co. Waterford
Considered to be Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford is a really nice place to take the family for a weekend break.
The new Treasures of Medieval Waterford museum brings the county’s history to life in an actor-led tour that kids will love.
The Bishop’s Palace and Reginald’s Tower are also great attractions, and you absolutely have to take a Suir River Cruise.
8. Clonmel, Co. Tipperary
Clonmel is a great spot if you like summer festivals, hosting lots of great events from the Clonmel Junction Festival (July) to Festival Cluain Meala (August).
It’s also nice for a relaxing weekend away with the kids with strolls through the fantastic Mulcahy Park, picnics in Parsons Green and lots of fun in Planet Playground.
9. Connemara, Co. Galway
This is where you’ll find some of the most amazing landscapes you’ll ever see.
From here you can visit Connemara National Park, Manor Connemara Ponies, Glengowla Mines, Clifden Castle and the Station House Museum – lots of fresh air to tucker the kiddies out.
10. Cork City, Co. Cork
Take the kids to see The Old Gaol, ring the Shandon Bells, be wowed by St Finbarre’s Cathedral and grab lunch at the famous English Market.
You can also take a short train journey to Cobh and Fota Wildlife Park for the day.
And try to visit Blarney Castle to kiss the lucky stone.
