We have seen a major shift in the approach to parental leave in some of the world’s biggest companies and corporations, and now Twitter has joined the movement.

The social media giant has this week announced its plans to introduce equal parental leave for mothers and fathers.

Under the new provisions, any employee with a new child will receive up to 20 weeks of fully paid time off. This will apply to parents who have just adopted a new child as well as biological parents.

Currently, only new mothers working for the company can avail of the 20 weeks’ parental leave; fathers and adoptive parents receive just 10 weeks.

Making the announcement, Jeffrey Siminoff of Twitter said the new parental leave provisions were drafted to reflect the ever-changing shape of the modern family.

“The goal of this change was to expand how we think about parental leave. Primary care-giving is something that’s hard to define,” he said.

He added: “We’re a very watched industry because of the products and services we offer. We want to lead by example, and by doing so we can influence the decisions of others.”

While the new provisions will come into effect in the US on May 1, they will be introduced on an international scale by no later than July 1.
