We have wonderful memories of family holidays from when we were kids – some abroad and some at home – and we love the idea of our kids making similar memories to treasure throughout their lives. Since we love getting insights into all aspects of family life in Ireland, we decided to conduct The MummyPages Travel Insight Survey

There were some really positive findings, with 66% of MummyPages mums saying they plan to take a family holiday abroad this year.

When it comes to measures mums take in order to create a stress-free holiday experience:

  • 20% of mums won’t fly abroad while their family is young
  • 61% of mums drive to the airport to make life easier
  • 35% of mums enjoy their holiday more when their children are of school age as they’re easier to entertain
  • 84% of mums believe that stress free travel to and from their destination is a key factor to an enjoyable holiday

In typical ‘mum’ fashion, it appears that even a sunny destination and a seat by the pool can’t make us relax, especially when it comes to clothing our families. 78% of mums worry about the mountain of laundry to be tackled on their return, while packing and unpacking voted the most stressful part of family travel by 56% of community.

One interesting finding of the survey was that although 80% of mums thought stress-free travel was an essential ingredient in creating a great family holiday, a significant percentage weren’t aware of all the helpful facilities in place at Dublin Airport to help families struggling to make it from Arrivals to their gate. For example:

  • 81% of mums didn’t know Dublin Airport provides a Concierge Service to assist families with their journey through the airport
  • 60% of mums didn’t know about the Dublin Airport Fast Track service through security

Mums (and dads!), however, were aware of the huge benefits of driving their family to the airport, with 61% choosing to take their family car when catching a flight.  There were a number of reasons for this decision, including:

  • Door-to-door convenience with just a 2 minute walk or 5 minute bus transfer to check-in
  • A quicker transfer home after landing from the nearby car parks
  • A more cost effective option – especially when you book in advance and use the long term car park with only a 10 min bus transfer to check-in
  • Peace of mind that the children arrive at the airport refreshed following a nap in the car
  • You can pack your luggage in the car the night before
  • Safe and secure parking
