From the body-shaming of celebrities to internet predators assuming false identities, the dangers of the online world are being reported on in the news every day. Now, the Minister for Justice has issued a fresh safety warning to children and young people around the country.

Speaking at the launch of the Press Council of Ireland’s annual report today, Frances Fitzgerald urged Ireland’s young people to be careful about the kind of images they post online, reiterating that one can never be sure whose hands the pictures will fall into.

With social media and photo blogging sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram constantly growing in popularity, the Minister said that education and information is crucial when it comes to teaching children and young people about the dangers that exist online.

“We really have to get the message out to young people, children and young adults – be very careful what you put up online. It can be abused, it can be kept forever online and you can be very vulnerable as a result of it,” said the Minister.

She added that while it has proven very difficult to deal with the issue legislatively, the Government and the authorities are “constantly working” on it.

Teaching your children about internet safety can start in the home, and here are some tips to help the process along.
