Flight delays without children are an inconvenience; flight delays with children are a complete nightmare. And with the busy Christmas travel season ahead and bad weather not too far behind, these five tips will come in handy.

Find out how long the delay is for

First things first, ask how long the delay is expected to last or if there is an alternative route that you can take. A train, bus or even a different flight might be available.

Get what you are entitled to

Ring the airline and make sure you get exactly what you are entitled to: food, drinks, accommodation if you are abroad and transport. If you don’t ask you don’t receive.

Get your bags

Make sure you get information on any bags checked in and whether you can get them back or not. Every airline is different so you will need to ask.

Get something to eat

The airport is going to get busy so go now and pick up food and snacks for the kids. You will also need to find a quiet spot where you can settle while you try to find out what’s going on.

Leave the airport

Unless you have been advised to stay, take the kids out of the airport and either head home or go find accommodation. Staying where you are will only see the entire family getting more and more restless and annoyed with each other.
