Mums and dads will have numerous conversations regarding who their child is more like – each parents' claim hinging on how much trouble the child is in at that time.

Well, researchers at the University of North Carolina have the official answer: children have more in common genetically with their fathers.

While we inherit equal amounts of genetic material from each parent, every mammal on the planet expresses – or ‘uses’ – more of the paternal DNA.

As well as being an exciting new finding, the study can also help in future investigations of human diseases, as the results show that a genetic mutation can have different consequences depending on which parent it’s inherited from.

But mainly it shows that despite Mum doing the carrying and pushing and bearing the stretch marks, Dad wins.

It’s our little one’s first word all over again *sob*
