You asked

Why does my child need to go to the optometrist when they have their eyes checked in school?

Your child needs to visit an optometrist as a school eye test is not a comprehensive eye test.
  • Eye tests in schools are not done on a regular basis
  • Poor sight can be misdiagnosed as a learning difficulty
  • One in five children has an undetected eye problem. Eye problems can be easily detected by an optometrist in an eye exam.
While eye exams at school are a great resource, they are not full and comprehensive eye tests. Checks in schools are not usually carried out by an optometrist and therefore certain issues can be missed. To ensure a comprehensive eye test is carried out, you will need to take your child to a registered optometrist. If left undetected for too long, some sight defects can prove difficult to correct.
