Very few of us mums have managed to implement a regular oral hygiene routine for our children without being met with a little resistance.

It can be difficult to encourage your child to tend to this requirement in the middle of a hectic morning and bedtime routine, but, as we all know, it’s simply not something that can be ignored.

Whether you’re the mum of a toddler or a teenager, it’s important to highlight the importance of this activity if you think your gang are starting to slack off.

According to Dr. Sarah Flannery, an expert in childcare dentistry at the Seapoint Clinic, it is important to begin a regular routine from the appearance of the first tooth at six-months-old and strive to implement it twice a day.

Toothpaste can be used from the age of two onwards while parental supervision is encouraged until a child reaches an age where they have the manual dexterity to brush thoroughly on their own.

By indicating the importance you place on your own dental health, you will be teaching your child that tending to their oral hygiene is part and parcel of daily life.

Acknowledging that the process can be tedious in the eyes of a child, Dr. Flannery suggests playing a favourite song during the routine - an approach which not only spices up the activity, but also offers a timeframe which a child can relate to.

By taking these tips on board now, you will guarantee yourself a peaceful household once those hectic school mornings make their return!
