Constipation can be one of the most uncomfortable conditions in the world, causing pain and bloating, among other serious problems. While constipation can be the result of anything from pregnancy and depression to colon cancer, sometimes there is a much simpler explanation. Here are five common causes of constipation.

1. Stress

It seems that there is not much that isn’t affected by stress when it comes to your health and your body. When it comes to your bowel movements, stress can have a major impact, mainly as it disrupts the function of the colon. This can lead to cramping and pain, and can prevent you from passing a movement.

2. Eating too much dairy

A diet which is high in dairy can slow down your digestion, causing you to become constipated. With these foods high in fat and low in fibre, the best advice to cure a bout of constipation is to cut down your intake, or mix in more roughage in the form of vegetables or salads.

3. Lack of fibre

On the subject of fibre, good fibre consumption is extremely important in maintaining a healthy bowel. Good sources of fibre in the diet include fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses.

4. Not drinking enough water

You have heard time and time again how important water is for your body, and your bowel is no different. Water adds liquid to your stools, which bulks them up and makes them easier to pass. This is why dehydration can be a major cause of constipation.

5. Not exercising enough

Dehydration causing constipation ties in with a lack of exercise. When we exercise, we sweat, which causes our bodies to demand hydration and keeps our bowel ticking over. A healthy amount of exercise and water intake will regulate your bowel. A good tip also is to avoid diuretics like caffeine after exercise.
