Relationships with our family members can prove quite difficult, even at the best of times. Some end up estranged, like Anthony Hopkins, who earlier this week said he doesn't know if he has grandchildren because he hasn't spoken to his daughter in so long.

Ryan Reynolds has likewise dealt with tensions in his family home. In a recent Mr Porter profile, he described his father James as 'a former cop, former boxer, full-time landmine'.

He opened up to the publication about their strained relationship, saying, "He was good in many ways as well, but he was tough on us."

"This is not meant to be some sob story – everyone carries their own bag of rocks around and I am no different in that regard – but growing up in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways," the Canadian actor added.

Now the Deadpool 2 star has revealed that he reconciled with his dad, and his wife Blake Lively was instrumental in repairing their relationship.

The father and son came together at Blake's behest before James died from Parkinson's Disease in 2015.

"She has a gift for foresight,” the 41-year-old reflected.

One touching sign of this reunion is their eldest daughter's name: James. She was born in 2014, before Ryan's dad passed away.

Speaking about his daughter's meaningful moniker, The Proposal actor said, "It felt right. All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad.

"My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.”

And as for his own parenting, Ryan said that he couldn't be more delighted to be father to James and one-year-old Ines.

“I love being a dad," he gushed, "It’s the best thing that ever happened to me."
