We often hear celebrities talk about their Irish heritage as the fail to pronounce the area their ancestors hail from.

However, one A-lister who seems a little more intent in embracing his Irish roots is Matthew McConaughey.

The father-of-three has links to Cavan and Monaghan and wants to encourage his children to explore their link to the country by learning the language.

“My kids are really privileged to call themselves Brazilian Irish,” the 46-year-old told The Irish Sun.

“Irish Brazilian, how great is that? Connected to two of the most vibrant, colourful, exciting cultures on the planet.

“I got to keep up the Gaelic. I want them reading the literature, I want Riverdancing, I want them saying, ‘grand’ and ‘lunatic to the marvellous.’”

The Oscar winner is so intent to educate his children on their culture he wants to send them to the Gaeltacht.

“When they’re older, I want to send them to that Irish language summer camp you guys do, it’s like a rite of passage for you guys, isn’t it? When you’re teenagers.”

Eight-year-old Levi, six-year-old Vide and three-year-old Livingston have a little time yet before they’ll be swapping red carpet evets for the traditional céilí but that gives dad time to brush up on his own Gaeilge.

“I want them fluent — which means I got to do a crash course too.”
