If your child has ever spent a considerable amount of time in hospital, it is unlikely you will forget the mental and physical exhaustion you experienced as you willed your little one to get better.

One world-famous father who knows all too well the terror faced by a parent when confronted with their child's mortality is much-loved actor, Johnny Depp, whose eldest child was hospitalised for an extended period after contracting an infection in 2007.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show this weekend, the 52-year-old star reflected on his highly-publicised hospital visits and explained that the gestures took on a more significant meaning after his eldest child Lilly-Rose was taken ill eight years ago.

Visibly emotional, the Pirates of the Caribbean star paid tribute to the parents he encounters while visiting young patients, saying: "The parents are the ones who are slowly dying and to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to thee people means everything in the world to me."

The highly-acclaimed actor, who recently opened up about the incredible relationship he shares with his daughter, was met with rapturous applause as he explained how much these visits mean to him as a parent.

Take a look at this touching exchange.
