Using her role in the latest Steve Jobs film as a platform to advise parents on their approach to digital devices and social media, Kate Winslet explains the importance of remaining in control at all times.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 40-year-old actress acknowledged the pressures put on parents in today's tech-savvy world, but insisted with the right approach, our children's reliance on gadgets shouldn't warrant concern.

The mum-of-three insisted that juggling numerous responsibilities was no mean feat, saying: "I think the parents are losing control, especially if they’re busy parents."

While adamant a child should only use the devices for educational purposes, Kate acknowledges that it can be hard to consistently monitor their use.

"It’s really hard to keep your finger on the pulse. It's an incredibly powerful educational resource if it's used correctly," she asserted while insisting she feels these gadgets are "being completely abused."

Aware that children are often given free rein of their hand-held devices, the Titanic star insists it is a parent's responsibility to take control of the situation, saying; "Take the device out of their hand. Don't let them sleep with it. Play Monopoly. These things are not rocket science."

Concerned that the world of social media is replacing personal interaction among families, Kate insists: "You have to stay in touch with your kids. It's as simple as that."

"When they want to go up to their room for an hour to do whatever they're doing, know what they're doing. And put parental controls in place," she advises.

Kate stars as Joanna Huffman, Apple's former international head of marketing, in her new movie which is set to hit our screens this month.
