Opinion was divided when a restaurant recently introduced a ‘screen free’ policy, and it will be interesting to see how this latest one goes down.

A flagship McDonald’s restaurant in Singapore is taking a unique approach to screen time management – by locking up patrons’ phones as they dine!

The restaurant, in Marine Cove, has implemented the ‘Phone Off, Fun On’ campaign. As part of the campaign, families dining at the branch will hand their phones over to staff, to be locked away in a wall of lockers.

The aim of the campaign is get dinner conversation going again, and to help families get the most out of their quality meal time together.

Face-to-face interaction, and family fun are at the centre of the campaign.

So, what prompted the chain to introduce the scheme? Well, according to Linda Ming, Director of Brand Communications and Customer Care, the decision was made based on customer feedback.

Ming told Channel News Asia that a survey was recently sent out to more than 300 parents, to find out their views on mobile phone usage.

A staggering 60 percent of parents surveyed admitted that the use of phones during meal times definitely equated to less interaction and quality time spent together.

Ming said that while staff will be constantly reviewing the success (or otherwise) of the campaign, it’s a case of so far, so good.

“We have introduced the service in our Marine Cove flagship restaurant as well as selected restaurants, and have received positive feedback – especially from families – so far,” she said.
