There has been a lot of discussion about the problem of homelessness in Dublin in recent times, and it seems that urgent intervention is needed, judging by the latest statistics released.

According to new research released this weekend, child homelessness in Dublin is increasing at over twice the rate of adult homelessness.

The statistics, published by the Dublin Region Homeless Executive’s Quarter 1, 2015 Report, revealed that the number of children in homelessness services increased 62% in the time period from June 2014 to March 2015.

With the number of children in such cases rising from 567 in June last year to 911 by March 2015, the report reflected that this was a “record high”.

Meanwhile, the report found that at the end of March 2015 there were 1,868 adults in emergency beds, which was an increase of 34% from last year’s figures from the very same date.

While researchers found that the rate of rough sleeping has fallen by almost 40% since last November, the number of people taking up emergency beds in the city has increased.

These are very upsetting findings, but hopefully these statistics are the trigger that local government needs to address this issue for once and for all.
