A six-month old baby has died after she was horrifically attacked by a dog last night.
The little one is believed to have been in the care of her extended family when the attack occured in Northamptonshire, England. A relative sustained serious bite wounds in an attempt to pull the dog off the baby.
Police were called to the house at around 10.30pm last night. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the baby girl but she was confirmed dead on arrival at Northampton General Hospital.
The dog was put down at the scene of the accident, and the breed has not yet been confirmed.
"Incidents such are these are extremely rare in this country," said local policeman Gary Baker, "but that will be of little comfort to the relatives of this tragically young victim."
He added that "the family have requested that they be left to grieve at this difficult time."
