Many who have lost a child – whatever the circumstances – understandably choose to grieve in privacy, but Catherine and Greg Hughes have made an incredible gesture in a bid to warn other parents.

As previously reported, Catherine and Greg lost their precious son Riley to whooping cough last March, when he was just one month old. They went on to set up the Light for Riley organisation in a bid to raise awareness for the condition, and their latest move has garnered much praise.

Mum Catherine has taken to Facebook in the past number of days to share a video of Riley’s final days, in the hope that it might save another young life.

Explaining the difficult decision to post the footage, Catherine wrote: “We are sharing this in the hopes that it will convince just one more pregnant mum to protect their baby from this disease. I wish I had known about pregnancy vaccination when I was pregnant with Riley.”

Recalling that Riley didn’t have the distinctive ‘whoop’ to his cough at first, she urged: “If your newborn baby has a cough, and is too young to be vaccinated, please get them checked out by a doctor! Early intervention CAN help.”

Since Riley’s tragic passing, the Hughes have campaigned for all antenatal care providers to make sure that the whooping cough booster vaccine is offered to every pregnant woman, in order to give extra protection to the child.

The Facebook comments alone show that the Hughes’ latest post and ongoing campaign work is making a difference to lives all over the world.
