Just how to achieve just the right inviting atmosphere in your home is hard to put your finger on.

You want your guests to feel as comfortable in your home as you do, but where do you start?

If you feel like your home could use an atmosphere boost, consider trying these tips.

1. Check your lighting
Step back and evaluate your lighting, then adjust it if needed. Fluorescent and halogen lights look harsh and are too bright for cosiness and warmth in the room. Use soft incandescent lights instead. Softing and low lighting works best for the cosy factor. Candles are also a good way to create atmosphere. Place various shapes, sizes and colors of candles on tables, mantels, or coffee tables. Candles when placed in front of mirrors bounce light, filling the room with a nice warming effect.

2. Scent your space
Our sense of smell is such a powerful thing, and pleasant smells can bring about the most positive feelings in the world. Make pot pourri, light some incense, or burn candles in every room. A scented home is a cosy home.

3. Be true to your own style
Your home should exude a lot of your own wonderful personality; that will add lots of atmosphere nearly instantaneously. Add your favourite artwork to your space, trinkets you’ve picked up on your travels, or accessories that catch your eye - from cushions to throws.

4. The magic of touch
One of the simplest tricks for a more welcoming home is texture. Surround yourself with things you would like to touch. Fluffy carpets, wavy wallpapers or smooth wooden furniture- all these can be easily integrated in a modern room, making it feel less rigid and perfectly comfortable. Moreover, when dealing with a large room, the proper use of fabric and texture can reduce the scale and provide the much wanted sense of cosiness.

5. Make good use of warm colours
While cooler colors like blue, purple and dark green can visually enhance a room, warmer tones such as peach-orange, brown and red can make a space feel more compact and therefore, more inviting.

6. Make use of variety of textures
Soft and fluffy pillows, cushions and throw blankets can make a room look cosier. While baskets and hardbound books arranged neatly in book cases, make the room look more sophisticated,  black chrome armchairs, metallic round chairs, modern irregular-shaped tables and large mirrors make the room look too formal.

7. Re-arrange the furniture
Re-arranging the furniture to the focal point of the room would go a long way in emphasising the 'cozy' factor. Move furniture closer to the fireplace area or near a window that gets lots of sunlight - a perfect place to snuggle around.
