Acne can be a terrible affliction for those that suffer from it. It can result in unsightly and bothersome scarring often manifesting in skin redness and deep pitted indentations as a result of inflammation and damaged pores. Luckily there are many things that those with acne can do in order to fade scars and heal skin. There are several treatment methods available, it might be best to see a dermatologist if you have acne so that you can work together to choose a treatment that's right for you.

Apply topical creams
There are both over-the-counter and prescription creams available for acne. These stimulate new skin cell growth and reduce the appearance of scars. Acne creams often contain alpha hydroxy or salicylic acids, corticosteroids or antihistamines which help reduce inflammation and itching.

Massage and pressure bandages
Scars that have raised tissue (hypertrophic scars) can be treated through the use of massage or pressure bandages which smooth out the build-up of scar tissue.

Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil gels have been known to smooth and heal the skin.

Vinegar
This acts like a mild chemical peel to remove the top layer of skin. It promotes rejuvenation of the skin.

Lemon or lime juice
These juices when applied to scars can lighten the colour of scars.

It is very important to be gentle with your skin and never to pick at your acne as doing so may cause the scars to deepen. Keeping your face clean by using an alcohol-free toner after cleansing is recommended. Exfoliating your skin can help reduce the redness caused from acne scarring, removing the upper layers of skin and promoting regrowth of new skin.

For those with severe acne scars, it might be worth considering microdermabrasion. This is similar to regular exfoliation that you do at home but the degree and depth of skin removed is greater with microdermabrasion. It can help to remove acne scars and to soften fine lines and wrinkles reducing the appearance of large pores.
