A meeting which took place in Fettercairn Community Centre on Wednesday night has come under fire following the distribution of a list which named children believed to be engaged in 'anti-social behaviour and intimidation'.

The list, which was distributed to attendees ahead of the Fianna Fail meeting on crime, has faced criticism on the grounds that it may lead to a rise in vigilante retribution.

The party has distanced itself from the ill-advised list, with Fianna Fail councillor Charlie O' Connor saying: "It was the wrong thing to do and that's not the way to do it. If people have information about those breaking the law in the community the place to go is directly to the Gardai."

The meeting which was organised to discuss crime rates in the area opened the floor to irate residents who feel the anti-social action of young people was going unpunished.

Commenting on the issue, one attendee said: "The guards tell us that they are too young and they can't to do anything to them. Some of these kids have ASBOs but there is nothing being done to them and their parents aren't being pushed to do anything about them."

While acknowledging the frustration and ill-feeling surrounding these issues, Charlie O'Connor maintains that it was 'wrong' to name individuals, but insists that the distribution of names was not the action of a party member, asserting: "There is no question in my mind that it was done by anybody who organised the meeting, but it was somebody coming into the hall who decided they wanted to do that."

The list which included personal details regarding those named was quickly removed by volunteers upon discovery.
