Fake tan is a tough one to do. Get it wrong and you can look anywhere from patchy to streaky to tangerine. But get it right and you’ll look like you just stepped off a plane from St. Tropez.

Seeing as it ‘tis the season for parties and all, here are five fake tan rules that you need to live by to avoid a tan disaster.

Exfoliate first

Make sure you exfoliate your skin before you put the lotion near you. This will help remove any dead skin build ups and give you a good, smooth base to work from.

Moisturise rough areas

While you need to allow plenty of time for your moisturiser to be absorbed before you put on the tan, you need to add a little moisturiser to your elbows and knees as the tan can look really dark here.

Wear gloves/ mitt

The last thing you want is to have stained hands, so make sure you apply the lotion with a mitt or glove. It will also create a much smoother finish.

Protect eyebrows

If you are applying tan to your face avoid the dodgy brown brow by rubbing a little petroleum jelly onto them – this will stop the tan sticking to this area.

Let it dry

Make sure you give it plenty of time to dry so that you don’t end up with white patches. Stick with very loose clothing or if possible stay naked until it is fully dried in.
