Brittle nails are not particularly attractive and can make you feel very self conscious, especially when you are working with your hands on a daily basis.

Unfortunately many of us hide our less-than-glamorous nails under a layer of polish, which can actually be making the problem worse unless you are wearing a protective coat.

Most of us long for enviable, elegant nails, not ones that are flaky and weak and crack easily; thankfully, if you do have nails that leave little to be desired, the following top tips should help you improve their condition:

  1. Frequently apply hand cream, especially after you have washing them.
  2. Protect your nails when cleaning dishes or doing the garden by wearing gloves
  3. Avoid using nail varnish or wear a protective base coat underneath
  4. Don’t use a nail polish remover that contains acetone.
  5. Make sure you are getting enough Omega-3 fatty acid, protein and are eating plenty of oily fish to help nail growth.
  6. Don't bite or pick your nails.
  7. Rub a nail oil in several times a week
  8. When using an emery board, make sure you work in one direction not back and forth.
