Breastmilk is the most recommended method for feeding babies, but contents are completely determined by the new mum. This makes the selection of foods important as what mum eats, baby also eats, so are there any foods that should be avoided while breastfeeding?

Everyone knows that it is not safe to consume alcohol while pregnant as it can cause Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. However, many may not realize that their babies are susceptible to the same syndrome if they consume too much alcohol while nursing. While the child will get a condensed amount of the alcohol you are drinking, you will be feeding your baby alcohol just the same.

Food allergies can show up in early infants as well. Since a baby’s immune and digestive system are still developing, anything that can affect their systems may make a baby sick, therefore avoid foods that are typically the cause of allergies in people like cow’s milk, eggs, peanuts and fish.

It is imperative to avoid extremes as well. Too much of any nutrient – fat, sugar, sodium – can affect your baby’s delicate system. Your minor sugar rush could turn into major discomfort for your child. Don't over consume citrus foods or foods high in vitamin C as this can cause nappy rash in your baby.

Whenever possible, eat natural and organic foods that are safe for growing babies. Avoid preservatives, additives and food colouring whenever possible.
