Being a mum is hard work, and no matter how many books you may read up on parenting before your little one arrives, you are in for a shock.

From how you feel about certain things to how you deal with particular aspects, you will learn more about parenting in the week after Baby arrives than you ever could have reading a book.

Here are ten things that you will learn in the first week as a mum:

1. Nothing will go to plan anymore

Afternoons out, day trips, movie nights and even a peaceful dinner will never go to plan – no matter how organised you may very well be.

2. Babies don’t follow a how-to guide

You are going to be winging quite a lot of it from here on in!

3. Your home will no longer be nice and pretty

Nah. Never again.

4. You will clean poo off your baby’s back but gag at bin smells

You will have no problem cleaning gross, sticky things off your baby but will still continue to gag at really nasty smells.

5. You will have an unlimited stream of questions

You’ve read everything you thought possible but still hundreds of unanswered questions swirl around your head, waiting to be answered by your GP.

6. You will get by on a few hours of sleep

And be able to function fairly ok the next day.

7. You are the boss

Not to frighten you or anything, but you will have to make huge decisions that will affect your family forever...

8. Baby can make the weirdest noises

And each and every one will have you running to the doctor!

9. Every mum does things differently

But there will always be one who insists you do it their way.

10. That it’s hard

It is one of the most important roles you will ever have, and it’s hard.
