Earlier today we shared the story of Emma Bromfield, who gave birth just two days after finding out that she was pregnant, and a similarly dramatic report has hit the headlines this weekend.

An 11-year-old ended up as her own mother’s midwife this week, when she delivered her new baby sister.

Tara Knightley went into labour in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and with her partner having already gone to work, it was up to daughter Caitlin Burke to step in and take charge.

After calling an ambulance, the Birmingham student followed an operator’s instructions over the phone and successfully delivered a healthy new sister. Caitlin then cut newborn Elsa-Monet’s cord – and headed off the school as normal for the day!

Can you believe it? What an amazing little girl!

As the eldest of five children, Caitlin is used to taking charge of situations, and although she was “scared and shaky” during the birth, she is delighted to have played such an important part in the process.

Speaking to local media, Caitlin said: “When my sister was born, I was really happy. I think she’s really cute and I love her very much.”

Mum Tara was naturally as proud as punch of her daughter, and she couldn’t help but gush as she heaped on the praise.

“I don’t know what I would have done if Caitlin had not been there. I couldn’t do what Caitlin has done at my age, let alone at the age of 11. She has such a bond with her baby sister now,” said the mother-of-six.
