It’s inevitable that your furry friend is going to get fleas at some stage.

If you're all out of flea spray or want to go down a more natural route, here are five DIY natural flea treatment and prevention techniques to keep your pet happy, healthy and itch-free.

1. Garlic and yeast
Mixing raw garlic or yeast into your pet’s food can repel fleas and ticks. The smell and taste of these foods repel the pests.

2. Apple cider or white distilled vinegar
Add 2one cup of white distilled vinegar/apple cider vinegar/both to ¼ litre of fresh water. Fill your spray bottle, and mist your pet, being careful not to get it in their eyes, nose, or ears-aka avoid spraying near the face. To get up around the neck and behind the ears/their chin area, dampen a soft cloth with the mixture and wipe it on. Spray your pet's bedding and around it with this mixture lightly as well.

3. Essential oils
Cats are tricky since their bodies don’t metabolie essential oils well, but for dogs, flea repelling essential oils include lavender, citronella, peppermint, eucalyptus, cedar and lemongrass. You can apply these directly to your dog’s neck or to their collar.

4. Lemon
Since cats are so sensitive to oils, you can create a gentle lemon juice wash instead. Place a thin lemon slice in water and bring it to a boil. Let it sit overnight. In the morning, use that lemon-infused water to mist your cat, rubbing it in. Do this once a month. This works for dogs as well.

5. Rosemary flea wash
Add two cups of fresh rosemary to two pints of water. Boil for 30 minutes. Strain away the water and discard. Place the boiled leaves into a gallon of warm water, place in a spray bottle and gently mist over your pet.
