A rented car can be a great way to get around while on holiday.

Having your own car gives you the opportunity to see as much of your destination as possible, saves you lots of money on public transport, and allows you to sightsee on your own schedule, and in comfort.

Here are some tips on how to save money on your car rental.

Book it early: Book your car early to lock in a lower rate, or even go with a better deal if you find one later. It’s always a good idea to book early, especially during peak travel times.

Look for discounts: There are lots of bargains to be had if you keep your eye open for them. Look into the organisations you belong to, such as mileage programs, to see what kind of rental car discounts they offer. Look online for available discount codes and bargain deals, and remember to also check with your credit card company to see if it offers a deal for rental cars.

Shop around: Keep an eye out for a better deal, even after you book your car. Ask friends for good car rental companies they’ve tried in the past, and even contact the company to ask if they can do a better deal than advertised if you agree to book straight away.

Research insurance: You may not need to purchase one from the rental company, so check to see if you are covered by your car insurance and credit card company.

Prepay: You can often get a cheaper rental rate if you pay up front for the car. You'll face cancellation fees if you end up changing your plans, but this might be a good option if the price is low enough, and your holiday plans are solid.

Airport alternative: Instead of booking a car from an airport rental car company, look into locations that are further away that may offer much lower prices. Although you may want to consider whether or not the extra time and hassle are worth the deal.
