Being a mum, it is the small pleasures in life that really make us happy. These simple things that we took for granted prior to motherhood are the things we really look forward to now.

Reading a chapter of a book in one go

Now this is a luxury. A few pages here and there is easy, but when we actually get into bed and manage to read an entire chapter without being summoned, interrupted or having to deal with a child who wants to get comfy is one of life’s greatest pleasures.

Finishing off a cup of tea that hasn’t gone cold

It’s hard to find the time to make a cup of tea let alone drink it, but when you have reached the end of your cup sitting in the same comfy place you started it and it’s still hot, it’s hard not to smile.

Going to the bathroom without spectators

With toddlers or very young children to look after, every trip to the bathroom has a spectator and even if you do manage to close the door, there will always be someone knocking on it or looking for you.

Having a long, hot soak in the bath

There just never seems to be enough time in the day to be able to take a quick shower never mind a long, hot, relaxing soak in the tub. But when the rare opportunity arises we jump on it with both hands, ready to use up our ever growing stock of bath products that we’ve had since last Christmas.

Lie-ins

Lying in bed until at least 11am was a daily weekend ritual pre-kids, but now while we can’t nor want to stay under the covers for the entire morning, a lie in until 9am is absolute bliss.

A clean house

The maths is pretty easy to calculate - lots of children equals lots of mess. Gone are the days of having a Pinterest-worthy home to show off and instead of scented candles adorning your living room you have piles of schoolbags, teddies and really stinky shoes.

Your own mum

You never really appreciate your own mum until you become one yourself. What she did for you and how you treated her in response can make you instantly feel full of regret for your entire teenage years. Now you call on her for every little thing from cooking to washing to “what’s wrong with my child?”.

Going out

While you might have sadly thought it was time to hang up your dancing shoes once baby number one arrived, you will catch a rare night out and when you do you will appreciate it all the more.
