A review has indicated that 21 cases of breech babies went undetected until after the onset of labour in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.

The review, which took place over a 26 month period, was ordered following the death of an infant in 2013.

In addition to the tragic death, two other serious incidents involving breech babies were reported in 2014.

According to a spokesperson for the HSE, implementations which were put in place following the review has resulted in the reduction of undiagnosed breech babies.

This review comes to light at a time when  maternity services in Irish hospitals is being called into question.
