After a five hour car journey, Danni Bett was only ten minutes from her father’s house when her car spun out of control beside a busy highway.

The car crashed through a fence and up on top of concrete pipes all while Danni’s newborn Indi was in the back seat.

Speaking to Kidspot, the mum describes how she couldn’t quite remember what happened next because of shock.

“I am still pretty scared about it, I can’t believe it happened. You always think these things won’t happen to you.

“People stopped and everyone was asking if I was OK, but I was screaming to get my baby out.”

A witness climbed up and got Indi out from her car seat and to safety ten minutes before the ambulance arrived.

“Thank God for the car seat. When I was pregnant and was looking at the prices, it was a lot, but I am so glad I paid for it. I feel like it saved her from any injuries.

“She had nothing on her, not a single scratch. Her heart rate didn’t move at all. She was in the ambulance smiling the whole ride to the hospital.”

However, Danni’s injuries had put her in excruciating pain.

Danni was breastfeeding at the time so was not allowed any drugs.

Placing her in a neck brace, she lay there listening to her daughter’s cries.

“I thought she needed a feed. I asked if I could I get the neck brace off to feed her because I was starting to get upset. But they said ‘no’, I wasn’t allowed to move.

“The nurse who was calming Indi asked everyone to leave the room and said she would pull my top down for me. And I said ‘thank God’. I was getting really upset, I wanted to feed her.

After a bit of manoeuvring, the nurse was able to help Indi latch on to her mum.

“I was instantly calm and so was Indi.

“My heart rate went down. The minute I got her on my chest I felt instant relief even though I was in so much pain.”

A nurse managed to capture the beautiful moment and after being released from hospital five hours later, Danni posted the picture on Facebook.

“The feedback from people is so amazing. I posted it because I wanted to say to people, no matter what people say, if you want to feed your baby you can, it’s our choice.

“I was in so much pain at the time. But I still pushed on. I just hope someone sees that and realises they can do that, too.”
