When it comes to looking after a newborn baby, some will say that you can never be too careful; however, when do we toe the line from being careful to overcautious?

One mum who has set conversation in motion on this topic is blogger Dipti Vaid Dedhia, who outlined her ‘7 Cardinal Rules of Visiting a Newborn Baby’ this week.

Her post, published on The Huffington Post, sets out her rules from the point of view of her five-month-old son, Diav, and it has met with contrasting responses from parents all over the world.

The first cardinal rule firmly states: “do not kiss me, anywhere, at any time, no matter how delicious I look. In fact, do not put your face anywhere near my face or my hands”. Instead, Diav asks that you plant a smacker on the top of his head or the bottom of his feet, only.

Diav’s parents also have strict rules for other parents seeking to visit the newborn. “If you have kids, do not visit me until I am 2 months old and have gotten a million vaccine shots…And don’t ask mommy and daddy if you can bring your kids anyway – they really don’t enjoy saying no.”

One of the most unusual additions to the list is Diav’s request of, rather than bringing him gifts that he “will likely outgrow…by the time you walk out the door”, instead gifting his parents with a congratulatory bottle of wine.

Dipti’s post has drawn plenty of commentary, with some parents claiming that these ‘cardinal’ rules are a little much.

While one mum deemed her “overcautious”, another observed: “I guess their kid, their rules. But they should not be surprised when no one wants to visit their kid because of all those annoying and overly paranoid rules.”

However, a number of parents stood up for Dipti, insisting that every parent has the right to enforce their own rules for their child.

“I don’t think these rules are ridiculous, not at all…I’ve seen people pick up a baby, then hand the kid to an eight year old! My rule is ALWAYS ASK FIRST!” wrote one reader.
