When it comes to applying eyeliner, most of us just quickly sweep it across the lower or upper lid without so much as a second thought.

However, while it usually looks ok, there is definitely more to defining your eyes than a quick sweep across your lid – in fact, you might be doing it all wrong in the first place.

Here are five things you are doing wrong:

Applying it in one motion

Rather than drawing on the line in one movement, you should work from the outer corner to the middle and from the inside corner until the two lines meet.

You are applying it on the inner line

Not only is it bad for your eye, but applying liner to your inner lash line can make your eyes look tired and small. Instead, run it along the outer lash line for a more open and safer look.

Only using a pencil

There are so many different varieties of eyeliner that you shouldn't just stick to a pencil: a gel can give you a dramatic look, while a pencil is good for during the day. On the other hand, a liquid liner is great for doing the cat-eye look.

You're not using white liner

You shouldn't just use black or brown - a white liner is great at helping you look more awake. Simply run it lightly along your lower lashes.

Putting on too much

While liner is perfect at creating a dramatic look, if you put too much on it can make your eyes appear small and heavy. Go easy on it, especially during the day.
