Baby girl names inspired by strong and empowering women

Today, March 8th is International Women’s Day — a day to celebrate all of the ladies in our lives, who support and inspire us each and every day.

It’s a day to remember all of the hardships women have had to endure throughout history in order for us to be here now and it’s a day to celebrate feminism, our female friendships and our sisterhood.

Raising a strong, independent and empowered daughter is one of the greatest gifts a mother could ever give to her child, which is why we’re celebrating the day that’s in it by putting together this list of all the best names for your baby girl, inspired by some of the most empowering women from around the world, past and present.

Britney - Named after Ms Spears, of course. Britney’s influence within the pop music genre is undeniable, not to mention the amount of adversary she’s overcome within the last 12 months, after ending her 13-year conservatorship, which has to be applauded.

Vicky/Victoria - CervicalCheck campaigner Vicky Phelan has been an absolute light of inspiration for all the women of Ireland. We stand behind her as she lives her life to the fullest while suffering from such a ruthless disease.

Diana - If you’re looking for a role model for your baby girl, then you really can’t go wrong with ‘The People’s Princess’. Princess Diana was respected and applauded for her abundance of charity work, in particular her unprecedented work with AIDs sufferers, as she went out to break the stigma surrounding this new disease.

Kellie - This would be the perfect name for any sports family, as Kellie Harrington has been making the nation of Ireland extremely proud lately, winning medals right, left and center.

Emma - Harry Potter fans might want to name their little girl after the franchise’s leading lady, Emma Watson. Not only is she renowned for taking on the iconic role of Hermione Granger as a child, but she’s also been doing phenomenal work with feminism and climate change in recent years too — what a woman!

Serena - Tennis star Serena Williams really is such an inspiration. Not only has she been regarded as one of the best female tennis players of all time, but she’s also a pretty fantastic mother to her four-year-old daughter, Olympia.

Greta - Climate change is such an important topic right now, and at just 15-years-of-age schoolgirl Greta Thunberg made an empowering speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, grabbing the attention of people all over the world and teaching young girls that they can accomplish anything, no matter how old they are.

Simone - Olympic gymnast Simone Biles captured so many people’s respect when she decided to drop out of last year’s Olympics due to mental health struggles. Asking for help isn’t always easy, especially when the world’s eyes are on you. Therefore, Simone could not have been stronger in that moment, making her a true role model.

Jameela - While most people might recognise her from The Good Place, Jameela Jamil is so much more than just an actress. She’s been working hard on inspiring confidence within women, creating better body image campaigns and having conversations about self love.

Ruth - Naming your darling daughter after the former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is quite the honour, indeed. Not only has she had to overcome tireless sexism in the workplace, but she was also the second female on the American Supreme Court, becoming an inspiration for women everywhere.
