A baby has been taken into emergency care in Portugal as police look into claims her parents were too drunk to look after her.

The couple - who are from Belfast in Northern Ireland - reportedly threw their 14-month-old daughter into a hotel swimming pool in front of horrified holidaymakers at their Algarve resort.

Other guests claim to have seen the mum staggering around with the little girl in her arms on the eighth-floor balcony of their hotel room.

Police were called by concerned hotel staff on Sunday.

The little girl’s dad is believed to have tried to fight with the officers when they arrived at the hotel.

The couple were questioned by police while their baby was being cared for at a children’s hospital in the regional capital Faro.

A hospital spokesman said later that the little girl was fine, with ‘no health problems’.

After being interviewed at Albufeira Court, her parents were allowed to visit their daughter in the hospital.

The couple were not arrested, but reportedly face two separate investigations, one into the alleged behaviour of the father, and the other to determine the welfare of the baby.

The couple had been coming to the end of a week-long holiday, but are now said to need the permission of the family court before being allowed to return home with their baby.
