It is one of the most hotly-discussed topics when it comes to motherhood, and given how we are smack-bang in the middle of World Breastfeeding Week, there couldn’t have been a more appropriate time for a mum to nurse live on air.

That is exactly what broadcaster Dil Wickremasinghe did on today’s instalment of TV3’s Midday, and it has sparked quite a discussion among the show’s viewers.

Dil was appearing on the show alongside Tina Koumarianos, Sonia Harris and Terry Prone to discuss breastfeeding and attachment parenting, when she discreetly began to nurse her newborn son Phoenix behind the Midday desk.

Revealing that it was a conscious decision to have Dil feeding Phoenix on the show, presenter Elaine Crowley said: “I think mothers should be free to choose how, where and when to feed their babies without judgement or condemnation. If I didn’t point it out, there is no way anyone would have known little Phoenix was having his lunch live on air.”

Many mums took to social media to praise Dil and Midday for the move, with one tweeting: “As a [first] time bf [breastfeeding] mum, that’s wonderful to see. BF is something so natural and should not have to be hidden away.”

Others sent messages of congratulations to Dil for ‘normalising’ breastfeeding not just in public, but before the eyes of the nation.
