Chiropody is the study of the feet. Chiropodists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of foot complaints and disorders. Many conditions of the feet will require the help of a Chiropodist; these include verrucas, athlete’s foot, ingrown toenails and calluses.

Verrucas
Verrucas are wart-like structures that appear on the soles of the feet. They are caused by exposure to viral infections and are highly contagious. A Chiropodist is able to remove verrucas without causing damage to the delicate soles of the feet.

Athlete’s foot
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the feet that is most commonly found between the toes. There are a number of causes of athlete’s foot including having sweaty feet and wearing tight shoes. It is also common for athlete’s foot to form when feet are not dried properly after swimming or bathing. A Chiropodist can help discover why athlete’s foot has developed and provide advice on how to treat it.

Ingrown toenails
An ingrown nail forms when the edge of the nail grows down into the skin of the toe. It can cause severe pain, swelling and redness in the surrounding area. This can be caused by ill-fitting shoes, when the nail is cut too short, or when the edges are rounded rather than cut straight across. If they are left untreated a serious infection may result.

Calluses
Calluses are thick hard skin on the surface of the foot that can cause discomfort and often pain. They are usually caused by poor fitting shoes, unequal pressure throughout the toes or from continual friction. They are treated by shaving down the surface and usually adding padding to alleviate pressure and to protect from infection.
