Spas offer a multitude of skin treatments from anti-aging facials, to lazer treatments to light therapy, but what exactly do they do? With many of these treatments, results aren’t seen overnight, instead they may be gradual with you noticing a slight difference in texture and tone over a few weeks or even months. Here, we look at some of the anti-aging skin treatment options offered in spas and what they do for your skin.

What are anti-aging facials?
An anti-aging facial is sometimes called a "deep-cleansing facial" or a "deep-pore cleansing" facial. They include all the steps of a basic facial, but with the addition of collagen serum, hyaluronic acid serum, and other skin-plumping treatments. These ingredients are targeted to aging or "mature" skin, which is usually age 40 and up. They target skin showing signs of premature aging and are usually delivered three to four weeks apart to improve the texture of your skin and achieve that youthful look. You can have anti-aging facials even when you're in your thirties, at this age the skin is already showing signs of aging.

Skin Tightening with Thermage
Laser skin tightening treatments like Thermage can improve the skin’s appearance with non-invasive radiofrequency technology. They can be very effective for tightening sagging skin and renewing facial contours by reshaping the skin’s innermost structures.
This type of therapy works by generating deep and intensive heat in the tissue underneath the surface of the skin. Contractions of the skin occur as a result, causing it to tighten. After about three to four weeks of sessions, results should become apparent. Regular use of an anti-aging moisturiser of high-quality is required to with this treatment.

Light therapy
This type of therapy is available only at select day and medical spas. It is an advanced technology whereby intense pulsed light can boost collagen production deep under the skin's surface. Over time, due to exposure to the coloured wavelengths the skin will begin to appear to be more toned and youthful. Light therapy offers a vast quantity of benefits for the skin. It usually takes a series of treatments before results are seen.

Infrared LED Light for example penetrates deeper than any other colour and works to combat the signs of aging by rejuvenating dermal and epidermal cells and speeding up the healing process.
  • Red LED Light stimulates collagen production, prompts cellular repair, and increases circulation in the layers of the skin. This mixture of LED lights is great for deeper lines and wrinkles, scarring, and for encouraging a more even skin tone.
  • Orange LED Light aims to bring vitality to life to dull complexions and to revitalise the skin. Orange light brings a glow to the skin.
  • Yellow LED Light aims to reduce the appearance of redness and swelling and can work well on rosacea.
The above are just some examples of the effects that certain colours used in light therapy can have on the skin. If you are considering any of the above treatments, ensure that you visit a reputable spa or medical centre and that you have fully researched the process first.
