There are so many ways to get the kids out enjoying the air this summer, and getting creative with chalks and paints is one of the simplest and most fun.

What you will need:

  • Corn starch
  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • Empty film roll canister
  • Alka Seltzer

What you need to do:

  1. The first thing to do is create your ‘pavement paint’. For this, all you need to do is mix water, corn starch and food colouring together – in no set amounts – in a container. What works best for this project is a container such as the plastic canister from a regular role of camera film.
  2. Create a ‘batch’ of different pavement paints using various different food colourings, and fill each canister to about one-third.
  3. Take an Alka Seltzer tablet (any generic form from your supermarket will do), and break it into about four pieces. Next, drop the pieces into one of your canisters, pop the lid on, turn it over, and stand back.

Your canister will fly up into the air, exploding to spatter the ground with a wonderfully abstract chalk paint design.
