The father of a toddler who was left with ‘profound’ disabilities after she her birth has said her life has been ‘destroyed’ because of the failings of an Irish maternity hospital.

Milagros Martin, who was born in December 2011 in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, developed cerebral palsy as a result of injuries sustained at birth.

Today, in the High Court, Judge Kevin Cross ordered an initial €1.9 million payment for the three-year-old, for deficits in care by the hospital. The Martin family also received a formal apology from the HSE.

However, speaking after today’s hearing, Milagros’ father, Ruairí Martin, slammed the hospital staff for their actions.

Admitting that he and his wife fear another family will end up sharing their experience, Mr Martin said: “Our daughter’s life has been destroyed forever as a result of the failings of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda medical staff.”

“While we welcome the HSE apology for breaches of duty, it is extremely disappointing that the individuals responsible have provided no apologies for their failings, nor has the hospital taken any action against them,” he added.
